When reroofing a structure that has an existing photovoltaic (PV) system, or when an existing PV system must be removed and reinstalled, both an electrical permit to remove and reinstall the existing PV per the approved plans and a reroof permit are required.
For reroof projects: the reroof permit’s final inspection cannot be completed until an electrical permit has been issued for the PV system removal and reinstallation.
Obtain an Electrical Permit
To obtain an electrical permit for reinstallation of the existing PV system, schedule an appointment with the Building Counter to obtain an EZ Electrical Permit. Appointments can be scheduled here. Bring the required forms detailed at the bottom of the EZ Permit webpage.
Inspection Requirements
The original approved plans for the PV system must be available on-site for the final electrical inspection.
If the original plans are unavailable:
- Contact the Records Room to request a copy.
- If no copy of the original approved plans exists, new plans must be prepared, submitted, and approved before reinstallation. Please note this does not have to be completed by the original installer, only by a qualified installer.
Note: The reinstallation must exactly match the approved plans. Any changes in location, equipment, or design require a new plan submittal.
Qualified Installer Required
The PV system must be reinstalled by a qualified person, who is also responsible for attending the inspection. License requirements for qualified persons can be found here.
